Miss Bertie Page by Kathleen Joy
There have been a few questions on random places online asking for places to enjoy burlesque in Brisbane. Looks like it’s time to make a guide! Of course, like all guides, this will be continually updated and changed, so feel free to comment if you have any other leads or ideas. (Pictures forthcoming!)
Classes
Scoundrelles Pole and Burlesque - based in the Fringe Bar, Fortitude Valley, with classes by director/Brissy burlesque mama Lena Marlene at Mad Dance (Elizabeth St CBD) and possibly BodyWize but I’m not sure if those are still on. 6-week terms, $180. Also offers occasional performance opportunities when available.
Miss B.B. le Buff - organises various classes on beginner and intermediate burlesque, as well as hula hooping. She used to be in Visible Ink but is now in AIR 149, Red Hill. 10 weeks, around $130. Also offers performance opportunities.
Lola the Vamp - she had burlesque classes going, but now she seems to be doing individual coaching. She’s based in B Confidential so it’s worth giving them a call.
World Fusion Dance Company - mainly does bellydance but also has burlesque lessons. Based in West End, $155/term or $149/term each if you book two at once.
Gigs/Shows
Miss Bertie’s Smokin Joynt - last Thursday of the month, The Joynt West End (right after the State Library/GOMA on Montague St). Free with a hat tip at the end. It’s usually themed and has a mad mix of people - some regulars but some crazy surprises too!
Star Rae Revue - last Sunday of the month, Brisbane Arts Theatre, Petrie Terrace (next to Roma St). $35 including supper. Currently has two parts - a pro variety show and an amateur Miss (and Mr!) Burlesque. (I’ve personally enjoyed the amateur section much more!)
CaBBaret - hosted by Miss Bebe le Buff. I’m not sure how regular they are. $22, StageDoor Dinner Theatre, Bowen Hills. (Anyone with more information?)
RaGTaG Revue - every few months, usually at The Fringe Bar, Valley. $10-$15. Mostly pros, usually themed, great fun! The Scoundrelles students usually put in a performance too.
Lola the Vamp at B Confidential - Fridays, 1pm, Upper Edward St. It was free entry last time I went but that might have changed recently. It is a gentlemen’s club, and sometimes the other dancers perform burlesque, but not all of them do. EDIT: She doesn’t do weekly shows anymore but she does still do specials.
There are also many parties, launches, and events around Brisbane that incorporate burlesque in some way. Keep an eye out on street press, the Web (Facebook and MySpace especially), and posters around town for more info.
To Come: Performers (this could get manic!), venues, retailers, burlesque-friendly organisations, media, websites - if you have any leads please comment and share!
